How Project Linus Began
Christmas Eve 1995An article appears in Parade Magazine entitled "Joy to the World" by Pulitzer prize winning photo-journalist, Eddie Adams. Part of the article features a petite, downy haired child. She had been going through intensive chemotherapy and states that her security blanket has helped her get through treatments. Karen Loucks decides to provide homemade security blankets to Denver's Rocky Mountain Children's Cancer Center. Project Linus is born.

Mission Statement
Project Linus is comprised of hundreds of local chapters and thousands of volunteers across the United States. Each volunteer and local chapter all work together to help us achieve our mission statement, which states:First, it is our mission to provide love, a sense of security, warmth and comfort to children who are seriously ill, traumatized, or otherwise in need through the gifts of new, handmade blankets and afghans, lovingly created by volunteer “blanketeers.”Second, it is our mission to provide a rewarding and fun service opportunity for interested individuals and groups in local communities, for the benefit of children.

To maintain and exceed the current level of quality service and compassion, despite unprecedented growth, for the children and families receiving handmade comfort across the country.To sustain and support 384 chapter coordinators, and newly formed chapters through ongoing training, communication and appreciation efforts.
To remain responsive and grateful to an estimated 35,000 volunteers nationwide.
To secure funding to support the general operating expenses and program services of the organization, thus providing opportunity for the fulfillment of our mission.
To concentrate full effort and energy on the mission of Project Linus.

Q. What type of blanket does Project Linus accept?
A. Project Linus accepts all styles of blankets you don't have to be an expert! Blankets may be quilted, tied, knitted, crocheted or no-sew fleece, etc. They must be new, handmade, washable and kid-friendly. Acceptable fabrics are 100% cotton, or poly/cotton blends, flannel, fleece (fabrics not acceptable are upholstery, leather, canvas, wool, corduroy, polyester double knit, satin.) Please no embellishments such as buttons or sequins. Elaborate or simple, they are all beautiful to a child. Free patterns are available on the national website: www.projectlinus.org.Q. What about sizes?
A. Project Linus accepts blankets in all sizes. We donate to children infants through teen years, so any size is accepted. Just think of the child that might receive your blankets and make it size appropriate. We ask that the minimum size be approximately 36” x 36” and suggested sizes are 36" x 36" for infants or toddlers; 36" x 45" for elementary age children; 45" x 60" for pre-teen; or 60" x 72" for teens.Q. Do the children keep the blankets?
A. Absolutely. Project Linus blankets are a gift for them to keep and take home.Q. Do the blankets stay in our community?
A. Yes. Unless there is an emergency or disaster in another chapter, your blankets will stay right here in our community.Q. Where can I send a monetary donation?

Project Linus was named after the adorable security blanket toting character from the Peanuts comic strip. Creator Charles Schulz was aware of our efforts and delighted to have Linus inspire blanket makers to help comfort children in need.
